Our Rambles are more like "Ambles"
Our "Ambles" (we wouldn't claim they're as long or arduous as Rambles) take place on the last Thursday of the month, April to October each year.
Led by our own Members who have devised and tested the walks, our Ambles are not full-day hikes or hardcore country route marches with stiles, fields full of bulls and muddy streams. No, ours are leisurely walks through towns, along seaside
promenades and the occasional rural idyll, at a pace that is not going to challenge you. And we try our best to finish at a suitable hostelry for a well-deserved drink and/or lunch (strictly optional!),
We also have an annual Amblers' Lunch in the late autumn each year, to celebrate the end of another season of walks with friends. Dress code - no hiking boots!
This year's Ambles:
April 30th - Walk around Chichester CANCELLED
May 28th - Loxwood Canal Circular CANCELLED
June 25th - Horsham Circular
July 30th - Circular around Bognor
August 27th - Trip to Gosport
Sept 24th - Walk around Littlehampton
Oct 29th - Trip to Windsor
Normally, full details would appear in our quarterly Circulars, and on this website, as we get nearer the dates of each Amble. Unfortunately, as we're sure you understand, no-one can anticipate when we will be back to normal service.
Our quarterly newsletters are posted or emailed out to all our subscribing members. They contain details of forthcoming events and lots of people news and rail travel information.
A small annual subscription for the newsletters is renewable on 1st January each year. Priced at £3 for 4 quarterly emailed newsletters, OR £5 for 4 quarterly posted newsletters (incl. P&P), we think it's a great way to keep in touch.
Our Outings and Matinee Club
Throughout the year, we organise outings and theatre trips for members and their partners to enjoy. Theatre trips and some of our outings are also open to friends and family - see details of individual events.
We love going to the theatre to see all sorts of shows. Especially musicals! We get great discounts on ticket prices by going as a group. Most ticket offers are in London's West End, but sometimes we visit local theatres in Sussex, especially our favourite, Chichester Festival Theatre. Our one rule? Must be a MATINEE PERFORMANCE!
If you're interested in going to the theatre with us, whether in London's West End or more locally in Sussex, just let us know. We send out details of ticket offers by email free of charge, or you can elect to receive details by post by providing us with some stamps or SAEs. You can bring as many guests as you like too - all are welcome.
We enjoy group outings to locations around London and the South East, enjoying discounted group rate admission prices and sometimes refreshments too. We don't travel by coach; to keep the cost down we make our own way to venues by public transport.
Details of forthcoming outings are publicised in our quarterly branch newsletters. You can bring guests on most of our outings, including friends and family if you wish.
Our Annual Events
Some events take place just once a year, but they're always worth the wait. Our Annual Lunch is always a highlight - a great chance to enjoy the company of other members over a nice lunch.
Once a year lots of us meet up for lunch together in a hotel restaurant. We have a raffle and a short welcome speech, but the rest of the time all you can hear is the clinking of glasses, the clatter of cutlery and a buzz of conversation from old friends and colleagues.
Our 2020 Annual Lunch was to have taken place on Thursday 26th March 2020, and Sussex branch members received a booking form with their Winter Newsletter which was sent out in late November. However the Annual Lunch has had to be postponed - no new date has been set but members will be kept informed through newsletters and social media.
Annual General Meeting
Not just the election of Officers and Committee Members, and the adoption of the Accounts. Oh no, that's not the half of it. After the brief business formalities, we have a break for tea/coffee and biscuits, and then sit down for an entertaining talk by our Guest Speaker.
Our 2020 Sussex Branch AGM was to have taken place on Tuesday 7th April at 14.00hrs. in the function room of the Hassocks Hotel, adjacent to Hassocks railway station. Following the AGM, we would have had a talk by our Guest Speaker, Laurence Leng, on the topic of Galton and Simpson (the writing team who worked with Tony Hancock, Frankie Howerd and Les Dawson amongst others, and who wrote Steptoe and Son). The AGM and Laurence's talk have been postponed until........ well, let's hope later in the year things start getting back to normal.
